About Quilt Tales |

Quilt Tales became the name for
Carla Brinkman's quilt pattern design business in 1998 after she discovered some
old quilt tops in a trunk in the upstairs storeroom of her grandpa's
house. Her family was preparing an estate sale & there was no one
left who could answer her questions about the quilt tops -- why they
were made, when they were made or even who made them. It was then she
discovered that the story is as important as the quilt itself. Quilts are not only useful or decorative; they are a legacy to future generations. Thus, each quilt pattern in the Quilt Tales line includes a short tale about the design & it's inspiration. Select images to enlarge. |

In following the Quilt Tales theme, Carla designed a
handmade book for quilters to make & use to record information about their
quilt. The book binding boards, fill-in-the-blank journal pages &
instructions are marketed as Quilt Tale
Kits. The book was designed
so that quilters could use fabric that matched their quilt to cover their
book. Each book only contains information about one quilt.
This way, the book can be given with the quilt as a gift or kept with the
quilter as part of her quilting legacy. Carla's goal was to help
quilters record their stories because she realized that sharing family
history is a lasting gift. |

About Carla Brinkman |

Hi! I started sewing on my grandmother's
old black Singer 301A while in 4-H. When I was in high school, I
made a few quilt blocks & used scraps from 4-H clothing projects to piece
a one-patch quilt top. Cutting templates out of sandpaper, then
cutting the fabric with scissors made it a whole lot more challenging to
get pieces to fit together properly than our methods do today.
Quilting has really come a long way since then! After high school, I went on to earn a degree in Home Economics Education & Adult Education from Iowa State University. After working for the Iowa State University Extension Service, getting married & earning my Master's degree, I moved with my husband to Williamsburg, Iowa. That's where I started my custom sewing business, had two children, joined the local quilt guild & renewed the interest in quilts that I'd formed in 4-H years ago. |

I started selling quilt patterns in 1995
after designing our local quilt club's Block of the Month project,
Heartland Stars (shown at right). The local quilt shop owner had
quilters begging for the pattern when they saw the quilt, so she asked me
to put the instructions into pattern format. I found that I enjoy
writing the instructions because I'm utilizing some of the teaching skills
I learned in college. In 1998, I participated in a Walk to Emmaus®, which helped me focus my priorities & clarify my purpose in life. The experience inspired & empowered me to look for ways to encourage others. That's why I teach occasionally & have included inspirational quotes in my latest patterns. As I continue to design quilts & write patterns, I strive to keep my life balanced & my priorities straight. I am thankful for many blessings & hope you will become inspired to record your Quilt Tales for future generations to enjoy. |
